LUXOLOGIST LURE:
Salobre Golf Resort is an oasis set amongst the dry rocky desert landscape, cacti and aloes of sunny southern Gran Canaria. Featured on Condé Nast’s Gold List 2019, the property boasts two 18-hole golf courses, private villas and, at the heart, a 5-star hotel with 7 pools, luxurious cabanas and large suites with gorgeous sea views.
Previously run by the Sheraton, Salobre now has a more relaxed hospitality concept, which is more focused on sports and recreation, while still retaining the same quality for amenities and service. Now guests can enjoy a well-equipped gym, regular sport classes, mountain bikes and trail runs, the Golf Academy, a trip to the luxurious spa and then conclude their day at the #1 restaurant in Maspalomas (and one of the best on the island according to Tripadvisor).
GUEST EXPERIENCE HIGHLIGHTS:
§ The only resort in the Canary Islands with two 18-hole golf courses of a high quality, making this location the ultimate destination for keen golfers. The resort has hosted important championships such as the Spanish PGA in 2006 and the Senior and Femino Spanish Championships in 2001.
§ Accommodation: Every room is spacious at the Salobre and every room also has a private balcony overlooking either the golf course and natural surroundings or the ocean. Guests can expect large comfortable beds with goose feather pillows, a bathroom with rain shower heads and RITUAL amenities.
§ Gastronomy: Salobre boasts 6 bars, restaurants and clubs. The highlights are SENS Kitchen Patio Garden (for one of the largest buffet’s you will experience for breakfasts and dinner) and Sidecar (recommended by Michelin and #1 restaurant in Maspalomas on TripAdvisor). At SENS, guests can enjoy seemingly endless options with multiple stands specialising in different culinary styles and presented fresh by the service team – from a fish stand to a grill stand to a dessert, pasta and local culinary stands. At Sidecar, gourmet plates and specialties are served with surprisingly delightful fusions and fresh, local specialties that we would highly recommend to anyone visiting the Canary Islands.
§ Activities: Regular sport classes (from yoga to aerobic and water sports) to a well-equipped gym with an extraordinary view to basketball courts, mountain biking, a football pitch, marked running tracks and a Golf Academy with a practice mile. The 7 pools are also a major highlight, including the infinity pool on the top floor with panoramic views over the island and private cabanas available to be booked.
§ Be Aloe Wellness: The private spa area offers cabanas overlooking the golf course and ocean, a Finnish sauna at 80ºC, bio tonic showers, an Oxygen therapy cabin with 99.998% pure air and a “vitality” pool with therapeutic jets, bubble beds and waterfall features.
§ Service: Management are welcoming and knowledgable and the guest service team from the restaurants to housekeeping are professional. The teams are also accustomed to dealing with high calibre guests and businesses – both Chanel & Santander Bank were hosting an event at the premise while we were there.
INSIDER TIPS:
§ The weather is almost always pleasant in this area of the Canary Islands, but we recommend visiting in February (there are fewer families and it is the perfect time to enjoy a warm break away from the European winter).
§ There is a secret pool on the premise. We were not permitted to mention where it is, but if you mention it at reception they’ll tell you where it is and you will likely have it all to yourself and enjoy sweeping views of the sea.
§ We highly recommend booking the Presidential Suite. It is widely considered the best suite on Gran Canaria and boasts large and luxurious living spaces, 360 degree panoramic views of the island and a private 60 m² terrace accessible by a spiral staircase and positioned on the top of the hotel (with a jacuzzi, hammocks and designer furnishings).
